Overheard at Johnson weekend

A few weekends ago, Washington and Lee hosted a crowd of high school seniors vying for the coveted Johnson Scholarship. For about two days these young hopefuls swarmed the campus learning about all things W&L, connecting with each other, interviewing for the esteemed scholarship, and running their mouths. The quotes below are overheard statements spoken by the Johnson finalists themselves during their time on campus:

  • “in the class I shadowed I raised my hand to answer a question six times. I bet everyone in that class thought I was so cool.”
  • “our tour guide told us he has to take squash and mountain biking to graduate that has to be a joke right”
  • “yeah my interviewer asked me if I thought the government should impose reparations or not and why”
  • “It’s so weird we’re the only ones here with rolling backpacks”

Please refrain from hastily judging these spry young candidates, they may be in your classes shockingly soon. Well, not your classes, they will likely be taking much harder and more rigorous classes than you. And surely you will hear about it.
